UN Development Programme launches SSMart for SDGs to facilitate development solutions exchange

03 November 2016

UNDP Associate Administrator Mr. Tegegnework Gettu addressing the opening session of the 2016 Global South-South Development (GSSD) Expo in Dubai

Dubai — The 2016 Global South-South Development Expo, South-South Cooperation: Enhancing innovation towards achieving the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development held in Dubai from 31 Oct to 3 Nov, showcased successful Southern solutions to the complex challenges facing the South today.

As part of the Corporate Strategy on South-South and Triangular co-operation (SSC and TrC), UN Development Programme (UNDP) introduced SSMART for SDGs —a global marketplace and an end-to-end service that will provide easy and broad access to demands and supply in development solutions to address challenges in achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The forum demonstrated how this platform will meet the needs and demands of governments, development partners, donors and financiers for local solutions with specific examples from other countries including the Saemaul Initiative in the Republic of Korea. At the forum, representatives from Argentina, China, Jordan, Lebanon, Viet Nam and Uganda presented their home-grown community development solutions and elaborated how such a platform can help to scale-up such solutions to better meet demands of communities in developing countries.

“Overall, experience has shown that all developing countries, regardless of size or level of development, have accumulated capacities and experiences which may be adapted by other developing countries. This Expo provides a unique opportunity to facilitate such exchanges,” stated Tegegnework Gettu, UNDP Associate Administrator at the opening session of the 2016 Global South-South Development (GSSD) Expo in Dubai.

“While we rightly celebrate these momentous agreements, we must remember that this is just the beginning of the process: ambition must become action. Transforming our world will take concerted efforts by all stakeholders, working together through all modalities. As highlighted in the 2030 Agenda, South-South cooperation will play an integral part of an inclusive global partnership to realize the ambitions of these global agendas,” he further stated.

Participants at the plenary session on “The 2030 Agenda and the evolving dynamic role and contribution of the private sector and the catalytic role of the UN system in sustainable development,” convened by UNDP, UN Global Compact and the Global CEO Alliance expressed the significance of partnerships between the public and private sector and its importance in South-South cooperation. In particular, the role of private companies in collaborating with governments to create jobs, establish value chains, build infrastructure, and deliver services.

The event also saw the launch of four UNDP commissioned research studies produced by think tanks from the South which aim to contribution and strengthen the global knowledge base on South-South and Triangular Cooperation.

At the forum South-South and Triangular Cooperation for Tobacco Control, UNDP along with WHO Framework Convention Secretariat (FCTC), presented results on their efforts to promote SSC and TrC for tobacco control. Representatives from Brazil, Malaysia and Uruguay examined the potential to scale up initial work to support tobacco control and to advance health, health equity and sustainable development more broadly.

The United Nations Office for South-South Cooperation (UNOSSC) is the organizer of the GSSD with Zayed International Foundation for the Environment as host on behalf of the Government of the United Arab Emirates. The event was attended by Principals and representatives of United Nations organizations, developing countries, donor agencies, business and private-sector groups, civil society organizations, think tanks and academia.

South-South co-operation is identified as increasingly important element of international co-operation for development. The 2030 Agenda and the Sustainable Development Goals strive to make co-operation impactful, focused on results, inclusive and overall effective.
