Marrakech, Morocco – Countries of the South and the North reaffirmed the importance of South-South and triangular cooperation for climate action and sustainable development during the recent COP22 meeting.

Mr. Jorge Chediek, Envoy of the UN Secretary-General on South-South Cooperation and Director of UNOSSC, participated in a number of events during the COP. He highlighted the vital importance of South-South cooperation (SSC) as a complementary modality for achieving the parallel and interconnected goals of the Paris Agreement and the 2030 Agenda.

On November 14, Mr Chediek participated in a High-Level Forum on South-South Cooperation in Climate Change organized by the Governments of China and Morocco, with support from the UN Southern Climate Partnership Incubator (SCPI) initiative and UNEPs International Ecosystem Management Partnership (IEMP).

The SCPI is a new initiative of the UN Secretary-General launched by the Executive Office of the Secretary-General (EOSG) in April 2016 in partnership with UNOSSC. It is designed to foster, promote, and advocate for South-South partnerships for climate action and sustainable development.

During this day-long forum, participants from Member States, UN entities, and civil society, discussed the current state of SSC in climate change, shared experiences, and outlined priority areas for action. In particular, panelists noted the importance of supporting countries to gather, analyze, and use data for evidence-based policy making and programme monitoring and evaluation. They also urged greater discussions on innovative financing mechanisms to support SSC.

Key participants included:

  • H.E. Mr. Xie Zhenhua, Special Representative for Climate Change, China.
  • H.E. Mr. Salaheddine Mezouar, Minister of Foreign Affairs and Cooperation, Morocco, and COP22 President.
  • Mr. David Nabarro, Special Advisor to the UN Secretary-General on the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and Climate Change.
  • Mr. Wu Hongbo, Under-Secretary-General for Economic and Social Affairs.
  • Ms. Patricia Espinosa, Executive-Secretary, UNFCCC.
  • Ms. Naoko Ishii, CEO and Chairperson, Global Environment Facility.
  • Mr. Ibrahim Thiaw, Deputy-Executive-Director, UNEP.
  • Mr. Magdy Martinez Soliman, Assistant Administrator, UNDP.

Mr. Chediek provided closing remarks alongside H.E. Mr. Liu Zhenmin, Vice-Minister of Foreign Affairs, China, and Mr. Halldor Thorgiersson, Head of Climate Change Support Team, EOSG.

In addition, Mr, Chediek moderated the Ministerial Dialogue, during which Ministers and other high-level government representatives from the 9 countries of the global South discussed the importance of SSC for their development priorities including achieving their NDCs.

In addition to the High-Level Forum, on November 16 Mr. Chediek was invited to provide remarks during a session on bamboo for climate action, organized by the International Network for Bamboo and Rattan (INBAR).
