3rd United Nations Day for South-South Cooperation

Introduction

The celebration of the 3rd United Nations Day for South-South Cooperation was held as a General Assembly event on Wednesday, 19 December 2006, from 3:00 to 6:00 p.m. in Conference Room 4 at United Nations Headquarters. The theme for this year was New Dynamics of South-South and Triangular Partnerships for Development.

The celebration included a high-level panel discussion followed by the South-South Partnership Awards ceremony and reception. Among eminent speakers were Mr. Anwarul Chowdhury, Under-Secretary-General and High Representative for the Least Developed Countries, Landlocked Developing Countries and Small Island Developing States; Ms. Nadezhada Mihaylova, former Foreign Minister of Bulgaria; Mr. Jose Antonio Ocampo, Under-Secretary-General of UNDESA and Dr. Supachai Panitchpakdi, Secretary-General of UNCTAD. A number of heads of United Nations organizations as well as high-level government and private-sector leaders were also present at the event, which was open to intergovernmental and non-governmental organizations and all UN and mission staff as well as the media and general public.
